Welcome to the Virginia Tech Universal Access Campus Map homepage for PC computers running Microsoft Windows™. This site is intended to direct individuals who may have mobility impairments, along the most accessible routes on the Virginia Tech campus. Here you will find the location of most of our handicapped parking spaces, accessible building entrances, and elevator/wheelchair lifts. The campus maps available at this site are the most up to date available to students, campus visitors, and the general public.

PC users who are comfortable downloading and using a Web browser plug-in or installing a small computer application

NOTE: Most computers are configured to allow this type of applet to be seamlessly installed, however you may need to ask permission of you System Administrator if your install fails (i.e., In order to successfully install this plug-in you will need to have either Administrator or Power User privileges to install this in Windows NT, 2000, or XP). Click this link to be directed to the Autodesk© DWF Viewer (formally WHIP™) plug-in (Version 7, or successor) download location. The plug-in will be installed in your default browser or as a separate helper application depending on how your PC is configured. It is recommended that you use Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5 (or later) or Mozilla Firefox version 1.5 (or later) as your default Web browser as the plug-in will not function properly within Netscape:

NOTE: Alternately, you can right click your mouse on the link above and select "Save target as" to save a copy of the map to your computer for immediate and future use. After download you can double click the file to open the map in your Autodesk DWF Viewer. This method minimizes occasional software conflicts between the DWF Viewer and your Internet Browser.

Navigation around the map on a PC (non-Macintosh) running Windows™ using a mouse or tack-pad:

The campus map's index has been broken down into six large print headings:

Clicking on any of the headings will zoom into that pertinent area on the index table. Once there, you can click on any of the building or area names, or their corresponding town grid section locations, to zoom to that view.
You should also take notice of the four boxed sections on the right-hand side of the DWF map, these will help you navigate easily around the map using the internal hyperlinks.
The top box in this right-hand section will take you to the newest alphabetical list of (hyper linked) campus buildings which also lists their grid location on the smaller university grid (shown in green over the entire VT & VT-CRC campus').
- Please note that while we have made our best effort to update the map and its corresponding hyperlinks correctly, occasionally some hyperlinks will not function properly. If you should encounter a link that does not work correctly, or if you see any errors or omissions on this DWF map, please email us (leonardo@vt.edu) so that we can correct the error in time for our next published update.

NOTE:Due to a recent upgrade of Autodesk's DWF Viewer not all of the options listed below will function as described here, they will however behave similarly. We are in the process of testing all of the new viewers functions and will have updated instructions posted soon. In the meantime please use the viewers "Help" function (shown as a Question Mark) located on the right end of the icon array shown in the upper left gray bar directly above the Map's black drawing window.

Also, when using the DWF Viewer as a plug-in within your Web Browser (e.g., Internet Explorer or Firefox) the "Back" button will not function correctly, you will not return to your previous map view. To return to the initial (or "opening") view, click the Refresh button near the top of your Web browser.

If you are operating the DWF Viewer without using your Web Browser (as described in note below lower orange button above) you will be able to use the forward and back arrows shown in the bottom row of icons at the top of your DWF viewer.

Your mouse's left, and right-hand buttons give you other navigation abilities when using the DWF Viewer plug-in. When your screen's pointer is shaped like a hand you can click and hold the left mouse button to move the map around your screen. Releasing and re-clicking (and holding) this button in a different screen location allows you to continue dragging the map around your screen.

If you click your mouse's right button you will see 12 single options and 1 offering 5 additional options. The most important of these options are explained below:

Options: This is a great place to start as you can set your DWF Viewer to open its hyper linked files with just a mouse click, requiring no keyboard input.

Zoom: This will allow you to zoom in and out of the map drawing, by left clicking and holding the mouse button. Moving the mouse up towards the top of your browser's window will zoom into the map. Moving the mouse down towards the bottom of your browser's window will zoom out of the map. Alternately, the wheel on a Microsoft Intelamouse will do the same, or you can use the "+" and "-" keys on your keyboard to zoom in and out respectively.

Zoom rectangle: This option allows you to zoom into the exact map area you wish to see. When you select this option, your cursor turns into a small plus (+) sign. Place your cursor to the side of the area you wish to zoom into. Click and hold down the left mouse button, and drag the mouse towards and over the area you wish to zoom to, you will see a small rectangle appear. This is your selection window. When you release the mouse button, you will zoom into that view.

Fit to Window: Highlighting and selecting this option will zoom to the map's extents (the view showing the entire Virginia Tech campus).

Named Views: Selection of this produces a window containing the names of all the views stored in this map drawing. This will allow you to scroll to the exact building view name that you wish to go to, bypassing the hyper linked index table. Simply scroll to and click on the building view name and the screen will zoom to that map area. One benefit of this option is that you can navigate the screen menu without having to go back and work through the click-able hyperlink index. However, the Named View Box can obscure a fairly large part of the map. To get around this, you can left click and hold your mouse (and cursor) on the blue bar, in order to drag the box to a different area of the screen. Or, you may choose to close the box by simply clicking the "X" in the upper right hand corner of that window.

Print: Selecting the print option will print the view that is currently in your browser's window.
