Please see the Main Virginia Tech Website (www.vt.edu) for information regarding our campus tragedy.

Welcome to the Virginia Tech Universal Access Campus Map text only homepage. This site is intended to direct individuals who may have mobility impairments, or just the need to have reasonably accessible paths, along the most accessible routes on the Virginia Tech campus. Here you will find the location of most of our handicapped parking spaces, accessible building entrances, and elevator/wheelchair lifts. The campus maps available at this site are the most up to date available to students, campus visitors, and the general public.

The Virginia Tech Universal Access Campus Map is available in four flavors: The easiest and most universally accessible of which are in Adobe Acrobat PDF format; There is one vector based drawing for PC users running Windows™ who are comfortable with downloading and installing a Web browser plug-in, and One for those on virtually ANY computer system with an Internet connection faster than that achieved by a 56K modem, and is running Microsoft's Internet Employer.

FOR ALL COMPUTER PLATFORMS

(Map last updated on 6-16-06)

Any computer user who has Adobe Acrobat, or Acrobat Reader (version 4 or later) on their computer system can click the link below to download, view, and print an 11"x17" color PDF map of the VT Universal Access Map. This map can be printed by selecting the "scale to fit" (or similar) command when in your printer's dialogue box after choosing the PRINT option under your FILE menu. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader (now Adobe Reader) installed on your computer, you may download and install it for free by clicking this link. After doing so you can download, view, and print this version of the VT Access Map by clicking here or on the image below [last updated 6-16-06]. A close-up PDF of the 2003 Access Map may also be downloaded by clicking here, While viewing the PDF map inside Adobe Reader you can also save it to your computer (for faster navigation of the map, or future reference) by clicking on the small image of a square floppy disk (usually in the upper left hand corner of the Adobe Reader). A Campus Map Index Page showing campus building locations on the "university grid" is also available in PDF format by clicking here (Please note that the hyperlinks shown in the PDF will not function).

You may also download an easy to view PDF copy (with color lines on a black background) of the Autodesk DWF map offered below by clicking the links later in this paragraph. This PDF contains "Bookmarks" of the same four quadrant (with sub-quadrants) campus grid plan as offered at: http://www.unirel.vt.edu/map/map-overall.html This 11" x 17" PDF of the VT Universal Access Campus Map is available both with and without a 1/4" white border; choose whichever may be easiest for you to read by clicking either of the following links: Access Map with border, or Access Map without border [last updated 8-13-03]. Please note that none of the Web links listed on the"PDF" maps will function; they are intended for use with the Autodesk DWF drawings and viewer plug-ins. Also, If you wish to print a copy of the VT Universal Access Map we recommend printing the VT Access Map [last updated 5-14-04] listed in the paragraph above in order to preserve your printer's ink.

Important New Building Access Information

Please Note; if you regularly access, or plan to access any building or parking (especially handicapped) located near or past construction areas on campus, please allow extra time on your commute to locate alternate parking or access route should your route or lot be blocked by construction or transient construction vehicles.

Also, it would be very beneficial to see the daily VT Campus Notices and this website’s Important Information as well as our Access Maps sections before venturing onto campus on any given day. These are our only ways of communicating any late breaking news that may help ease your travel on all our grounds. Please use our Access Maps to plan your alternate routes beforehand.

We have a lot of construction on campus this summer and apologize for any inconvenience that it may cause our VT community and visitors.

Old Turner Street is Closed between Turner and Stanger Streets for Construction

Stanger Street will be closed May 14 - 25 due to steam tunnel upgrade project

Effective May 14-25, Stanger Street will be closed to all through traffic at a point in front of the Performing Arts Building due to the university's power plant steam distribution system upgrade.

Motorists and pedestrians will have access to parking lots and service drives, including the Prices Fork Road, Perry Street and Upper Stanger Street parking lots and the service drive located behind Burruss Hall. There will be detour signs and arrows directing pedestrians toward accessible crosswalks and sidewalks around the project site.

Further information is available by clicking the linked-line to the right or scrolling to the Road Change Announcements section below.

The Major Williams Hall elevator repair project is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 14

The elevator will be out of service for four weeks. During this time period, major components of the elevator, other than the cab itself, will be replaced. Our proposed schedule is May 14 through June 8.
Faculty or Staff requiring the use of the elevator to access their offices or classrooms should discuss their concerns with their supervisors, Students should contact Services for Students with Disabilities ((540) 231-3788 Ph, or 231-1740 TTY).

Please contact Kim Briele at sbriele@vt.edu or 1-7561 with questions or concerns.

We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation and patience.

Burruss Hall Renovation

Work has begun on renovating the rear (North) third of Burruss Hall’s first and second floors. The scope of the project will restrict access to the back hallway between both East and West side halls on both of the aforementioned floors, the rear halls elevator will not be affected. The interior access between the first floors side halls will be via the Burruss auditoriums side doors and across its orchestra front during this time. The second floors side hall access will be via the front (South) hall. Due to the multiple levels on this floor, the North-East halls handicap access to rest rooms may be more easily achieved by using the rear elevator to the third floors rear hall and then using the restrooms off of the North-West hall corner. The easiest interior access from the first floors powered Handicap entrance to Burruss’ front hallways and offices on the first and second floor is to ride the rear (North-East) elevator to the third floor and then head to the South-West front corner elevator and back down as needed.

A map of these routes will be posted near the barricades blocking Burruss’ rear hallways; it is available for online download from VTs Universal Access Campus Map website by clicking on the following link: www.maps.vt.edu/BurrussMap.pdf . Further directions are available at: www.vtnews.vt.edu. Provisions are being made for more directional signage at this time. The work is scheduled to be finished by the Fall semester 2007.

If you should have any access concerns please contact either the Services for Students with Disabilities office at 231-3788 (TTY: 231-1740, ssd@vt.edu), or the Director of University ADA Services office at 231-4638 (TTY: 231-6258), adainfo@vt.edu .

Road Change Announcements

Please Note - The following Current Traffic and Accessible Pathway Changes:

Old Turner Street is Closed between Turner and Stanger Streets for Construction

There is Steam Tunnel work being done on Old Turner Street. The project began on 04/25/07 and should be finished in approximately eight weeks. During the construction we plan on having one-lane access open to the loading docks on Old Turner St. Also, during this period both ends of the street will remain accessible to the Print Shop and the Ware Lab at all times. Extreme caution should be taken when traveling through this area, however we are encouraging pedestrian and wheelchair traffic to avoid the construction zone by going around this section of Old Turner Street via the access routes in the Upper Quad (please see the VT Universal Access Map for accessible paths, etc.).

Stanger Street will be closed May 14-25 due to steam tunnel upgrade project

Effective May 14-25, Stanger Street will be closed to all through traffic at a point in front of the Performing Arts Building due to the university's power plant steam distribution system upgrade.

Motorists and pedestrians will have access to parking lots and service drives, including the Prices Fork Road Lot, Perry Street Lot, and Upper Stanger Lot, and the service drive located behind Burruss Hall. There will be detour signs and arrows directing pedestrians toward accessible crosswalks and sidewalks around the project site.

The purpose of this project is to allow for greater capacity and create a more efficient steam system on campus.

A map of effected areas and project updates are available at Capital Design & Construction website.

For more information contact J.W. Wood at 540.231.9325.
