Welcome to the
Virginia Tech Universal Access Campus Map homepage. This site is intended
to direct individuals who may have mobility impairments, or just the need
to have reasonably accessible paths, along the most accessible routes on
the Virginia Tech campus. Here you will find the location of most of our
handicapped parking spaces, accessible building entrances, and elevator/wheelchair
lifts. The campus maps available at this site are the most up to date available
to students, campus visitors, and the general public. The
Virginia Tech Universal Access Campus Map is available in three flavors:
The easiest and most universally accessible of which is in Adobe Acrobat
PDF format; There is one vector based drawing for PC users running Windows™
who are comfortable with downloading and installing a Web browser plug-in;
and One viewable for those on ANY computer system (MACintosh©, LINUX,
UNIX, or PC users (without the need of installing anything)) with an Internet
connection of 56K or faster.

Important
New Building Access Information (approach to, or inside of structures)
Please Note; if you
regularly access, or plan to access any building or parking (especially
handicapped) located near or past construction areas on campus, please
allow extra time on your commute to locate alternate parking or access
route should your route or lot be blocked by construction or transient
construction vehicles. Also, it would be very beneficial to see the
daily VT
Campus Notices and this website's Important
Information as well as our Access
Maps sections before venturing onto campus on any given day. These
are our only ways of communicating any late breaking news that may
help ease your travel on all our grounds. Please use our Access
Maps to plan your alternate routes beforehand.
We have a lot of construction on
campus this summer and apologize for any inconvenience that it may cause
our VT community and visitors.
Spring Commencement 2008 (May 09, 2008
update)
Please see the following websites for further information; for General Commencement info click here or for Commencement Special Needs/ Accessibility info click here.
Henderson Hall
/ Blackbox Theatre Construction - Road and Sidewalk Changes
(February 16, 2008
update)
Please Note; Henderson
Hal is now closed for renovation, during this time, a Blackbox (Performing
Arts) Theatre will be constructed along its side - Please make note
of the Road and Sidewalk Changes listed below.
Virginia Tech recently awarded a construction contract for the renovations
of Henderson Hall and Construction of a new Blackbox Theatre behind
Henderson Hall. This important academic and civic project will update
aging Henderson Hall and construct a new performance venue. The community
is requested to be alert for changes to sidewalks near Henderson Hall
and some construction traffic on College Ave. On Monday February 18th,
the contractor (Avis Construction Company, Inc) will begin mobilizing
to the site. During the week, fencing will be erected around the area
for safety reasons. Some sidewalks on
the east and west sides of Henderson Hall will be closed. A portion
of sidewalk on the north side of College Ave near the rear parking
lot of Henderson Hall will be closed. Pedestrians are encouraged to
use cross walks at College Ave/Main St and between Henderson/Squires
to avoid the sidewalk closure. The temporary fencing
is expected to be in place until the summer/fall 2009. All university
offices formerly located in Henderson Hall have been relocated to
other buildings; the SSD office is now located in Kent Sq. (please see below for further information.
Please contact Van Coble at 231-4380 if you have any questions.
The Services
for Students with Disabilities (SSD) office has moved downtown to Kent
Square
Please Note; The
Services for Students with Disabilities office has moved from Henderson
Hall to the third floor of the Kent Square building in downtown Blacksburg
(as of February 11, 2008). Wheelchair Access is easiest
from the Washington St. side entrance, or via the fourth level of
their parking garage (which opens to the buildings third floor via
a small ramp and a door along side the elevator) near the handicap
parking spaces. There is also a van accessible Handicap parking space
outside of the garage, it is located off of Lee Street on the Kent
Square grounds.
Please see the SSD website for further
information at: http://www.ssd.vt.edu
Suggested Kent Square Access Route from Campus
Click the image below for the example Access Route from Squires to Kent Square & the SSD office with written directions. >>>
Please note that some of the town curb cuts along this route could be better, however we have found that this is the most accessible route. However, when entering or exiting Kent Square on the Washington Street lobby side-entry please be aware that due to the incline of the hill and sidewalk there are a series of steps built into the incline - exiting the plaza area that is directly inline with the doors; these brick steps are exiting a brick plaza and are made of the same color brick! Please be aware that there is no color difference between the bricks to help you distinguish that there is are built-in stair steps there; so use caution if you are heading forward towards or away from these doors; whether you are visually impaired, affected by a sudden change in light levels, or a wheelchair or scooter user. Please note that if you need a level path into this building, such as a wheelchair user would need, you will need to enter and exit this plaza at the end nearest Washington and Main Streets, i.e. its North-East corner adjacent to the Washington Street sidewalk (this path is cutting diagonally, a short way through this plaza (around the side of a cafe table & chairs) between the lobby doors and the sidewalk).
Norris Hall has reopened for limited access
Virginia Tech
Students, Faculty, and Staff may access Norris Hall through the side
entrance across from Burruss Hall (the old main handicap access door).
Please have appropriate ID with you, as all those entering must present
a valid VT Hokie Passport at the door for admittance.
Steam Tunnel
Upgrade Projects
There are two Steam Tunnel
Projects currently on campus:
-
The first and most intrusive
will periodically impede traffic, parking and access routes at several
locations throughout campus. Check back here, the VT
homepage notices, and the VT
transportation department website (info. & project maps)
frequently for updates. Warning; IF you are using
Windows XP & Internet Explorer Version 7.0.5730.11 (the latest
as of 12-11-07) as your Web Browser it may crash if you click on
either of the following two (2) PDF Access Map links (near the end
of this paragraph). If so please accept our apologies, return and
avoid these two links until Microsoft or Adobe release a patch to
prevent this from occurring. You are safe clicking on any other
link in this, or use any other web browser with this website, AFTER
the three Campus Work Access Map links in the paragraph
below.
The Steam Tunnel work at the corner of Westcampus Drive and Washington Street (highlighted in yellow in the image above) at the Career Services Building will soon be finished, yet the work towards the
front of the Student Services Building will expand further up Washington Street to just past the front of the Student Services Building (towards Ambler-Johnston Hall) beginning March 24,
2008. Please remember that as before, the HANDICAPT PARKING will
be in the Coliseum Lot accessible ONLY from Spring Road; the
actual spaces will be across from Student Services - in this
lot - along the Washington Street Side. Washington Street
however will be closed for the duration of this project except
on certain dates; please see section immediately below. For
the latest Universal Access routes to Career & Student Services please
click the image below for an enlarged PDF containing a
picture of the site. Please Note that the Career Services Access Routes shown in the illustration above will still hold true until the sidewalk at the corner (near the roundabout) is completed.
(March 24, 2008 UPDATE)
-
Washington Street is closed
between Spring Road & West Campus Drive until approximately
mid May 2008
(March 24, 2008 UPDATE)
Beginning Monday, March 10th both lanes of Washington Street
closed to all vehicle traffic between West Campus Drive and
Spring Road & will remain closed until approximately May 7th. This closure will be 7 days
a week and 24 hours a day. More details regarding the closure, to
include a map of the site and the detour route, can be found at: www.facilities.vt.edu/steam.asp
<-- Washington St. Detour (Click image for
an enlarged PDF of road detour)
The roundabout will remain open and functional but
one of the 3 legs (Washington Street) will be closed. Spring Road
will remain open with traffic allowed to exit only heading east onto
Washington Street. Pedestrian traffic will be allowed to use Washington
Street but must observe the signs for re-routing of sidewalks due
to the steam tunnel construction. Additional handicap parking will
be temporarily installed in the Coliseum Lot to address the spaces
lost on Washington Street. Blacksburg Transit routes, that use Washington
Street, will be detoured to an alternate route with alternate bus
stops. See the Blacksburg Transit website for more details at: www.btransit.org
The road will re-open temporarily for significant
events on campus such as the Yankee’s baseball game on Mar 18th
and the April 16th Remembrance Events. The road closure is due to
complications from the steam tunnel construction project along Washington
Street. We recognize the inconvenient nature of this road closure
but believe it will provide several important benefits to our campus
to include improved safety adjacent to the construction site, predictable
driving conditions, and a shorter construction schedule for the steam
tunnel project. If you have any questions please contact the construction
project managers; Randy Morrison at 577-4904 or Bruce Ferguson at
231-3177.
-
The second project
which began in June, '07, involves interruptions to many sidewalk
access routes on campus. We have a close-up map of the
proposed construction areas available in a
Color PDF (729Kb). Whenever printing any map linked to this
page, make sure to set "Scale-to-fit" or your printers
equivalent, in order to prevent clipping of the document. Please
check
back here, the VT
homepage notices, and the VT
transportation department website for updates daily.

Wallace Annex and Graduate Life Center at Donaldson-Brown chairlifts are currently under repair
The Wallace Annex chairlift is out of service and we hope to have it back in service in a few weeks. Housing has a chairlift out at Donaldson Brown, it is expected to be back in service within two weeks. Please contact jdkern@vt.edu for further information. (4/07/08, UPDATE)
Burruss Hall tunnel's chair-lift will be taken out of operation;
alternate wheelchair access to or from Burruss' 1st & 2nd floor
front offices will be via the Hall's elevators; please see below.
The wheelchair lift in the tunnel
bisecting Burruss' first floor will be permanently taken out of operation
(& later removed). Wheelchair access to the front of Burruss Hall's
first and second floor will be via the rear (South-East) Handicap entrance then via the Hall's rear
and then front (North-West) elevators: The interior access between
the front and rear first floors halls will be via the third floor. Due to the multiple levels on the
second floor, full handicap access between the Hall's front and rear
may be more easily achieved by using the respective front
and rear elevators to loop around via the third floor.
Please note that this will
be the only wheelchair access route for individuals (prospective
students, etc.) traveling to the undergraduate admissions offices.
Directional signage to the Admission
Office will be placed throughout the building. A map of these routes
will be posted near the Burruss rear hallways; it is available for online download from VT's Universal Access
Campus Map website by clicking on the following link:
www.maps.vt.edu/BurrussMap.pdf.
Provisions are being made for more directional
signage at this time.
